Who we are

Damien Mosley

Damien Mosley is an English-Sri Lankan writer and the founder of Indie Novella, an independent publisher and social enterprise committed to championing diversity and inclusion in publishing. With a background as a journalist and aid worker, Damien brings a wealth of experience to his literary endeavors. His heartwarming and humorous novel, Joined Up, explores themes of disjointed families, unconventional relationships, and London's north-south divide.

Beyond his writing, Damien is dedicated to empowering emerging authors, offering insights into editing and storytelling through various platforms. Under his leadership, Indie Novella has is recognised as the "Rock n’ Roll of Indie Publishing," supported by Arts Council England, and continues to publish authentic voices that resonate with a wide audience. The Bookseller recognised Damien as a Rising Star (2023) and his novel Relationship on the Green is out in 2025.

The Alternative Literary Consultancy was founded by the editorial team behind Indie Novella, born out of a simple but pressing demand from our writing course students: Do you offer manuscript assessments?

As a publisher, Indie Novella has always championed accessibility in publishing, running free, agent- and publisher-led courses to support emerging writers. But we recognised that many authors needed more individual attention—guidance tailored specifically to their manuscript, rather than generic industry advice. That’s why we created The Alternative Literary Consultancy: a place for honest, fair, and empowering editorial support that helps writers develop their craft, rather than selling them empty promises.

At the heart of this consultancy is Damien Mosley—a professional editor, author, and writing tutor. As the founder and commissioning editor of Indie Novella, Damien has worked with scores of authors, taking their work from manuscript to bookshop shelves. Under his leadership, Indie Novella has published acclaimed writers, including V. S. Pritchett Shortlisted and Booker Prize-nominated author Martin Raymond, Watson Little x Indie Novella Prize winner Sue Amos, and former Disney animator Sarah Airriess. Damien also developed the Indie Novella Writing Course, which has supported over a thousand writers on their journey to publication.

The Alternative Literary Consultancy is powered by a team of publishing professionals, including journalist Kate Pasola and the Indie Novella editorial team—editors who have worked on novels such as The Lobster Pot, Relationship on the Green, Teardrop, Lotte, and Don’t Go To Work The World Is Ending.

Our approach is hands-on and collaborative. We don’t sit at a distance, critiquing from afar. Instead, we work with you as partners, offering practical insights and actionable feedback, drawn from years of experience editing both fiction and non-fiction. Just as Indie Novella has always sought to level the playing field in publishing, this consultancy exists to help every writer have a real shot at success—not through gimmicks or shortcuts, but through better writing, stronger storytelling, and a clearer path forward.

In 2023, we expanded our mission with the Diversity in Publishing Partnership, bringing together leading literary agencies, publishers, and independent booksellers to make the industry more accessible and less elitist. The Alternative Literary Consultancy is an extension of this ethos: a space where writers of all backgrounds can access expert editorial support that is transparent, thoughtful, and genuinely invested in their growth.

If you’re looking for a consultancy that values real insight, honest feedback, and a belief in your potential, you’ve come to the right place. Welcome to The Alternative Literary Consultancy—where we help you turn your manuscript into the best version of itself.
